Arvid Julius Gottfrid Virgin (born June 9, 1831 in Visby on Gotland , Sweden , † April 30, 1876 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish portrait , genre and landscape painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Virgin was a son of the artillery captain Johan Fredrik Wirgin (1788-1863) and his wife Sofia Lovisa Crusell (1800-1876). After finishing school, he attended the Stockholm Art Academy from 1852 , where he participated in academy exhibitions from 1858. In 1862 and 1863 he went abroad, to Düsseldorf and Paris . In 1862 Virgin became a member (agré) of the Stockholm Art Academy. Eva Bonnier was his student.

family

Virgin belonged to a noble family that originally came from Pomerania . His father had completed a military career and on April 9, 1820 married the daughter of Captain CJ Krusell (also written as Crusell) and his wife Sophia Jacobina (née Hofving). Virgin had several siblings:

  • five brothers: Carl Frederic Samuel (* 1821), Robert Wilhelm Urban (1823–1855), Otto Birger Theodor (* 1824), Claës Gustav Leopold (* 1825), Axel Barthold Adrian (* 1828) and Johann Bernhard Alfred (* 1830 )
  • and two sisters: Sophia Margaretha Charlotta (* 1822) and Amalia Aurora Clementina († 1827)

On November 1, 1866, he married Anna Severina Carolina Olivia (nee Gelertsen, 1846-1884). The couple had a daughter Arla (* 1871), who married Curt Wallis (1845-1922) in 1893, a professor of pathological anatomy at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm.
