history

In what was then the Portuguese colony of Angola, the two leading Portuguese brewing companies Companhia União Fabril Portuense das Fábricas de Cerveja e Bebidas Refrigerantes (CUFP, today Unicer ) and Sociedade Central de Cervejas e Bebidas (SCC) founded the CUCA - Companhia União de Cervejasão de Cervejasão de C Angola . In 1952 the brewery opened in Luanda . Since then, Cuca has been the most popular beer in Angola.

After Angola's independence in 1975, all major companies were nationalized , including brewing companies. In 1980 the state-run beer company Empresa Nacional de Cervejas de Angola (ENC) was founded, in which, in addition to Cuca, the other Angolan breweries were also combined, in particular EKA , Nocal and Ngola .

In 1994 the Angolan Ministry of Industry signed a cooperation agreement with the French BGI of Groupe Castel , which provided for investments and, in return, a large minority stake and essential management of the Cuca brewery. The Angolan management has been working with BGI in the brewery sector since 1993.

With the end of the Angolan civil war in 2002 and the onset of economic growth, beer sales also increased significantly and required major investments and modernization. In 2005, the Angolan government decided to privatize the country's four breweries, in addition to Cuca, Nocal, also based in Luanda, EKA in Dondo and Ngola in Lubango .

Castel BGI then took over the Cuca, EKA and Nocal breweries in 2007 and has been running them since then in its subsidiary Cuca BGI. Around 2009 it expanded existing breweries, in particular the Cobeje plant in Bom Jesus near Luanda, and built additional breweries, such as the Cerbab in Cabinda and the Nocebo in Huambo .

As part of an agreement with Castel BGI, SABMiller handed her holdings in Angola in exchange with holdings in other African countries, especially Nigeria. Since then, Cuca BGI has owned the most important beer brands in Angola with Cuca, EKA, Nocal and Ngola and also distributes Coca-Cola , Guinness and other brands.

Cuca BGI then turned to export for the first time. After exporting regularly to São Tomé and Príncipe and especially in border traffic to Namibia, they also began to sell to Portugal and London. In addition to Cape Verde, Cuca intends to export more to Portugal in particular and has already started planning its own brewery there in order to avoid the high transport and import costs in the future. Brazil and the USA are the other strategic export destinations of Cuca BGI.
