Sagres is a Portuguese beer brand. It has existed since 1940 and, together with Super Bock, is one of the dominant beer brands in Portugal.
history
The umbrella group, founded in 1934 under the name Central de Cervejas , is Sociedade Central de Cervejas e Bebidas, SA The brewery is based in Vila Franca de Xira north of Lisbon . Until the Portuguese Revolution on April 25, 1974 , the Central de Cervejas was a large group of breweries under the leadership of Manuel Vinhas. At that time, the Angolan Cuca , the Mozambican Laurentina and parts of the Brazilian brand Skol belonged to the group. The brewery group was dissolved and partially nationalized as part of economic policy after the Carnation Revolution. Then the Sociedade Central de Cervejas e Bebidas was sold to a Colombian group. A few years later the brand was bought back by the Vinhas family. Internal conflicts and disagreements caused the Vinhas family to sell to Scottish & Newcastle in 2003 . Since April 2008 she has been part of the Dutch Heineken Group . While there was only light (Sagres Branca) and dark (Sagres Preta) in 1940, more and more varieties have been added in recent years.
You look in vain for the brewery in the most south-westerly place on the European continent called Sagres . This gave the beer its name because of its popularity.
Sagres is the market leader in Portugal.
