Cacuaco is a city and a município (administrative district) in the metropolitan area of the Angolan capital Luanda . It mainly consists of hut settlements, the so-called musseques . The largest poor district with around 180,000 inhabitants is called Paraíso (German: paradise ). Cacuaco is known for its religious festival in honor of the city patron São João Baptista, where a procession to the sea has been held every June since 1948. Cacuaco, which was still a small fishing village in 1936, is popular with the residents of the capital because of its white sandy beaches. Concerts with thousands of spectators are also held there. Feira da Beringela , a fair for agricultural products and livestock, takes place in the village every week . The Município houses the largest grain mill in Angola, the Moagem do Kikolo , which was modernized in 2018 , as well as the largest cement factory in the country, Nova Cimangola . The Rio Bengo flows through the city in a southerly direction.

The place was in the global public eye in 2005 when the UN discovered cases of the Marburg virus there and made it public.

crime

Cacuaco is one of the highest crime circles in the greater Luanda area. Gangs consisting of 15 heavily armed men roam the neighborhoods on foot and rob passers-by, at night they come with motorized three-wheelers and break into the huts. A particular target are families with a member of the National Police. After the city administration installed street lighting at night in a neighborhood, the lamps were stolen by the delinquents. These are mostly young men from the neighborhood who are protected by their family members. Robbery victims who report charges are threatened. The police do not have enough resources to maintain public order. The raids are particularly common on Fridays and at the end of the month, when the workers are on their way home with their wages. With Viana , Cacuaco is also one of the circles where prostitution with minors is most common.
