Kikolo is a community on the outskirts of Luanda in Angola . It consists of several large slums ( musseques ) and has around 500,000 inhabitants. The place is crossed by the paved main road N'Gola Kiluanje, the remaining traffic routes consist of small roads made of earth and mud.

administration

Kikolo belonged entirely to the Município Cacuaco , a bastion of the opposition party UNITA , but before the 2017 elections for electoral reasons it was split between it and the neighboring district of Cazenga , where the ruling party MPLA rules, in order to weaken UNITA. The municipality is divided into 16 Bairros : Augusto Ngangula, Bandeira, Boa Esperança Central, Boa Esperança III, Candua, Cardoso, Cemitério, Combustíveis, Campão, Comandante Buala, Kawelele, Kikolo Sede, Mulenvos, Ndala Muleba, Pedreira and Paraíso.

economy

The Moagem do Kikolo wheat mill is located in Kikolo . It was reopened by the Portuguese-Angolan entrepreneur Rui Costa Reis in 1992 after 25 years of inactivity and at the end of 2017 it was expanded to become Angola's second largest wheat mill with a daily production of 1,150 tons of flour.

Kikolo's glass factory, Fábrica de Vidros do Kikolo , opened in October 2009. It is the only factory in Angola and one of the few in Africa that makes tempered glass.

Another factory produces sheet metal, including for roofs and walls, with a daily volume of 45 tons.

Kikolo is best known for its large market on compacted earth, with a length of 2.75 km. The Mercado do Kikolo is one of the largest in the capital with around 7,000 sellers. Mainly groceries are offered, but it is also home to the largest hair market in Angola. In more than a hundred barracks imported hair from India and China as well as synthetic hair, which is called "Brazilian hair", are sold.

education

There is a lack of sufficient primary and secondary schools and teachers. These are poorly paid and sometimes they stay away from classes for weeks or months. The students are then only instructed by an “explicador” without teacher training. Many classrooms are improvised. There are not enough school desks so students have to bring their own chairs. There is also a lack of school books, although they are supposed to be distributed free of charge in state schools. The government spends US $ 140 million each school year producing 40 million school books. At the beginning of the school year, however, these are largely illegally sold by corrupt employees of the schools in Kikolo to market traders, who sell them on for Kwanzas  1000. The books are delivered to the market in Kikolo at night so as not to attract the attention of the authorities.

public safety

The high crime rate is a major problem for the residents of the various neighborhoods. For example, in neighborhoods like Paraíso or Balumuka , robberies and thefts take place several times a day. Firearms and stabbing weapons are mostly used, which also cause fatalities. The attacks are mainly carried out in the morning and during the night. The main targets are students and employees who are on their way to or from their workplaces. The main reason why crime is so high is that there are almost no police patrols. Other common victims of robberies are motorcycle taxi drivers. The sellers of the market in Kikolo, especially in the "Panga-Panga" zone, are also often victims of attacks in the early evening hours. The security situation in the community is so dangerous that, for example, the US embassy forbids its staff to walk on the street at any time.
