Cazenga is a town and a district in the metropolitan area of the Angolan capital Luanda .

In 1975 Cazenga was still mostly inhabited by residents of European origin. After the outbreak of the civil war, however, more and more refugees moved from the unrest areas to Luanda and especially to this urban area, which received the largest number of refugees. As a result, the district still suffers from a lack of social infrastructure.

administration

Cazenga is the seat of a district of the same name ( Município ) in the province of Luanda . The district of Cazenga has an area of 38.6 square kilometers and a population of 862,351 (2014 census), compared to around 425,000 inhabitants in 2009 (2009 estimate). The estimate for 2019 is 1,045,000 inhabitants.

The districts of Rangel and Sambizanga border in the west, and Cacuaco in the north . To the east lies Viana and to the south Kilamba Kiaxi .

Cazenga is divided into six municipal districts (Distritos Urbanos):

economy

At the time of independence, Cazenga was one of the most productive industrial zones in Angola. Companies such as IFA, Mabor General, Ulisses, Textang, Curbol and Condel were based here. Shortly thereafter, however, the economic decline began due to a lack of qualified workers, insufficient maintenance of the machines, a lack of materials and poor management. The industrial area became an industrial cemetery. Even the reintroduction of the market economy in 1990 could not reverse the situation. Only one company survived, the manufacturer of electrical conductors Condel. The shutdown of dozens of factories led to a sharp rise in unemployment. Many former industrial workers now devoted themselves to precarious trade in informal markets such as Asa Branca.

Infrastructure

In Cazenga, only 14% of households have canalized water, the proportion with electricity connections is slightly higher, but there are regular power outages. Large residential complexes - including the city administration building - therefore have their own generators. There are 83 public schools, including six secondary schools, a teacher training center and an Instituto Médio Politécnico, as well as two hospitals.

As part of the urban requalification project (Projeto de Requalificação Urbana) for Cazenga and Sambizanga, which began in 2011, 60 apartment buildings with a school and health center as well as two new main streets, 7ª Avenida and 19ª Avenida, are to be built here. High-ranking members of the government of then President José Eduardo dos Santos , however, are accused of embezzling a total of $ 3.15 billion from the account of the BESA bank responsible for the project. The accused also included José Filomeno dos Santos , the president's son, General Manuel Hélder Vieira Dias Junior, and the then head of the security service, Leopoldino Fragoso do Nascimento.
