The Luanda airport or Quatro de Fevereiro Airport is currently the largest airport in the African country of Angola . It is located in the Maianga district and just under four kilometers from the center of the capital Luanda . However, the Angola International Airport is under construction and will later take up most of the international air traffic.

In 2009, around 1,800,000 passengers were counted at Luanda Airport.

Like all Angolan airports , the airport in Luanda is operated by the state-owned ENANA .

General

The airport has two runways that are 3700 meters and 2600 meters long. It is open 24 hours a day and operated by the Angolan military. An ILS approach to runway 23 is possible. However, the airlines also use the navigation aids provided by the NDB or VOR . A bank, a snack bar, several souvenir shops, some travel agencies and a restaurant are located at the airport.

A new, modern and international airport, the Angola International Airport , is currently being built 40 kilometers east of Luanda near Viana . A Chinese construction company is building two north-south parallel runways, a modern reception building and the cargo terminal on an area of 5000 hectares. The entire terminal building is to cover 160,000 square meters and is designed for a capacity of over 13 million passengers per year. The cargo terminal will have an area of 6,200 square meters and a capacity of 35,000 tons of cargo handling per year. The north runway will be 4.2 kilometers long and the south runway 3.8 kilometers. The construction company is the China International Fund . However, this stopped work at the end of 2009, as the agreed payments were not made due to Angola's acute financial crisis. Due to the growing volume of passengers and freight, the burden on the previous airport is increasing.

Airlines

Several international airlines operate in Luanda, with traffic to and from Europe playing an increasingly important role. National transport only plays a subordinate role. Lines such as Lufthansa , which flies to Frankfurt am Main , or the Russian Aeroflot to Moscow are stationed . Further destinations are in the People's Republic of China , Cuba and the USA. Other airlines that fly to and from Luanda: Cubana , Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique , Hainan Airlines , South African Airways , TAP Portugal , Air France , Ethiopian Airlines , Emirates , Delta Air Lines , Air Namibia , Air Zimbabwe , British Airways , Brussels Airlines , Kenya Airways . Angolan airlines that fly to international destinations are TAAG and Sonair .

Incidents

  • On February 2, 1999, an Antonov An-12 cargo plane of the Santa Cruz Imperial from the United Arab Emirates (EY-ASS) , registered in Tajikistan and operated for the Angolan Savanair , returned immediately after take-off from Luanda Airport due to technical problems , probably due to engine problems or fire. On the approach to Luanda, the plane crashed 6 kilometers east of the airport in the densely populated residential area of Cazenga . The cargo consisted of 14 tons of food. All four (according to other information eleven) crew members and 13 people died on the ground.
  • On February 12, 2000, a Boeing 727-82 (F) (cargo version) of the Transafrik (S9-NAZ ) broke apart when landing on runway 23 at Luanda-Quatro de Fevereiro airport in extremely strong winds (50 to 80 knots). After an initial go - around, the right wing touched the ground on the second attempt to land. There were no injuries in the accident, but the aircraft was destroyed.
  • The theft of a Boeing 727 at Luanda Airport on May 25, 2003 caused a great stir internationally . The machine with registration number N844AA was in a park position when it suddenly started moving. The air traffic control tried to contact with the machine, but did not succeed. The plane took off from the airport and has not been found since. It is reportedly believed that aircraft mechanic and private pilot Ben Charles Padilla was on board the machine. The FBI and the CIA searched for the machine around the world. The Boeing 727 was later reportedly sighted by a Canadian pilot in Guinea's capital , Conakry . In the meantime, however, it is assumed that it was a mix-up with another Boeing 727 with the registration number N862AA , whose aircraft registration number in Guinea was changed to 3X-GDO . Several African governments interfered in the incident, as the US government suspected that the Boeing could be used for another attack, similar to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 .
