Maianga is a municipality in the metropolitan area of Luanda , the capital of Angola .

Over a million people live in Maianga

administration

Maianga was one of nine municipal districts, Municípios , that made up the metropolitan area of the capital. In the course of the restructuring in the administrative division after 2011 Maianga became a municipality (Comuna), after 2016 a municipality (Distrito Urbano) in the district (Município) of Luanda, in the province of Luanda .

Maianga has an area of 24.7 square kilometers and a population of over one million. It is in close proximity to Luanda Airport . In the west the community borders on Samba and the Atlantic Ocean , in the north on the community Ingombota and in the east on Rangel . The municipality of Kilamba Kiaxi is located south of the airport.

Maianga includes the districts of Cassequel, Catintón, Gamek, Huambo, Morro da Luz, Prenda and Rocha Pinto.

Since the Rocha Pinto district was founded 40 years ago, the residents there have had no water connection. You have to purchase the water for your daily needs from tank trucks. However, this has no drinking water quality .

economy

Angola's first jewelry factory opened in Maianga in September 2019. On an area of 1485 m², the Pedra Rubra company not only grinds rough diamonds, but also processes them into pieces of jewelery. Instead of just exporting the rough diamonds as before , the new factory aims to increase added value tenfold. There are already two other diamond cutting factories in Angola.

public safety

The residents of various neighborhoods in the district are exposed to high levels of crime. It is mainly gangs consisting of 13 to 16 year old youths who do not attend school and who consume alcohol and other drugs that attack and rob the residents. Students in vocational schools in particular are constantly attacked, even directly in front of the educational institutions. The school security forces do not intervene, otherwise they will also be attacked. Because of their age, the authorities did not put the perpetrators in prisons, but only detained them for a few days by the police. However, the police presence in the neighborhoods is very low, a condition that has been lamented by the residents for many years. There is only one police station on the Belenses football pitch. Burglaries also take place every day. The delinquents drive in trucks in front of selected houses and load the stolen objects. In the Catintón district, the residents do not dare to use the bridge over a sewer ditch, as they are regularly robbed there, sometimes even killed. They prefer to take a detour by taxi. In addition, there are gangs from the Democratic Republic of the Congo who extort protection money from the saleswomen, shopkeepers and truck drivers of the Catintón market. However, the Maianga police have occasionally had some success. In October 2018 she arrested a 23-year-old serial killer who raped and killed nine women in Catintón.
