Ingombota is a municipality in the metropolitan area of Luanda , the capital of Angola .

history

The community emerged in the second half of the 17th century as a camp of escaped slaves. After 1869, the population grew sharply when after a smallpox epidemic in the Coqueiros district, the residents were relocated to Ingombata. It was a musseque until the 1930s . With the massive immigration of Portuguese in the 1940s, the black population was displaced into the Operário district and the periphery of Luanda. In the 1960s, Ingombata already had an urban character, there were several high-rise buildings and numerous multi-storey residential buildings. After independence in 1975, many Portuguese left the country and the educated black middle and upper classes moved into the community.

administration

Ingombota has an area of 9.6 square kilometers and about 370,000 inhabitants. This makes this part of the city one of the most densely populated areas in the capital and thus the actual city center. In the west the community borders on the Atlantic Ocean , in the north on the Bay of Luanda and in the east on Rangel .

Until 2011 Ingombota was a separate district ( Município ) with the communities Ingombota, Maculusso, Kinanga, Ilha do Cabo , and Patrice Lumumba. Since then it has been a community (Comuna) in Luanda County.

Place name

The word Ingombota comes from Kimbundu , a national language of Angola. There are two theories about its origin. Ingombota is believed to be a combination of the words “Ingombo” and “Kuta”, which means a place where there is an abundance of okra , a vegetable. Another possibility would be the crossing of the words "Ngombo" with "Kuta" which means something like a haven for bandits (possibly slaves), whereby the word Ngombota, in Portuguese became Ingombota.

Location and sights

The community borders the Bay of Luanda and is partly on a hill. It houses the President's Palace, some ministries, several cultural institutions, most of the large state companies - such as B. the oil company Sonangol - and the central station of Luanda .

The Ilha do Cabo is the strolling area for the inhabitants of Luanda, with its sandy beaches and the view over the bay of Luanda. Here is the church of Nossa Senhora do Cabo , the oldest church in Angola.

The Baixa (Lower Town) is the financial and business district of Luanda. Several ministries and Angola's largest companies are located here. Domestic and foreign company offices are mainly located on Avenida 4 de Fevereiro , the waterfront. There are numerous skyscrapers, including the tallest building in Angola - the 145 m high Imob Business Tower - several top hotels, numerous restaurants, clubs, bars, bakeries, kiosks, shops of all kinds and the only shopping center in the center of Luanda - the others are in the suburbs (as of 2020).

In the Cidade Alta (Upper Town) there are government buildings already mentioned, the National Assembly of Angola , the São Miguel fortress of Luanda and the Jesuit Church. Paulo Dias de Novais , the first governor of Angola and city founder in the 16th century, is also buried here. This part of Luanda is very popular with visitors and tourists as a constant presence of police officers around the government district ensures a high level of security.

Ingombota is also home to the Museum of the Angolan Armed Forces , the National Museum of Anthropology , the Museum of Natural History of Angola , the Museum of Science and Technology, and the Museum of Money of Angola.
