The Museu da Moeda (German: Museum of Money ) is an underground structure below the Praça Saidy Mingas on Avenida 4 de Fevereiro in the center of the Angolan capital Luanda . It was inaugurated in May 2016. The museum is bounded to the north by the Bay of Luanda, to the west by the 100 m high Kianda Towers, to the east by the National Bank of Angola and to the south by the Banco de Poupança e Crédito . With an area of 4425 m² it has rooms for permanent and changing exhibitions, an amphitheater , a cloakroom, a cafeteria and a souvenir shop.

history

When the museum was being planned, the suburb of Talatona was originally intended as the location. However, it was decided to have a more visible presence on the magnificent avenue Avenida 4 de Fevereiro (Marginal) in the historic old town, alongside other important banking houses. Due to the lack of space at this point and in order to preserve the historic Praça , an underground construction was decided. At the entrance there are only four futuristically designed metal awnings. Construction began by the Portuguese company Grupo Confrasilvas in March 2013 and was completed in two and a half years. All building materials come from Angola. The limestone was sourced from Benguela , the wood from Uíge , the granite from Huíla and the marble from Namibe .
