Paulo Dias de Novais, 1st Governor of Angola

Paulo Dias de Novais (* around 1510; † May 9, 1589 , Massangano , Angola ) was a Fidalgo of the court and Portuguese explorer and conqueror in Africa in the 16th century and the first captain- governor of Angola. He was the grandson of the explorer Bartolomeu Diaz .

Novais received a deed of gift ( Carta de Doação ) from King Sebastian I in 1571 , which gave him the title of Governador e Capitão-Mor, conquistador e povoador do Reyno de Sebaste na Conquista da Etiópia ou Guiné Inferior . He sailed from Lisbon on October 23, 1574 and landed at the Ilhas de Cabras - today's Ilha do Cabo - near Luanda in what would later become Angola on February 11, 1575. The church Nossa Senhora do Cabo was built at this point in the same year . Attracted by the prospect of the famous Cambambe silver mines , he founded a settlement near São Paulo , near the Ilha do Cabo.

He died unmarried as the last male descendant of Bartolomeu Diaz. He was first buried in Massangano. His remains were transferred to Luanda in 1609 and buried in the local Jesuit church.
