Cambambe is a county in Angola . The current time is West African time (UTC + 1h). It corresponds to the Central European Time.

The Cambambe Dam , which dams the Cuanza to generate electricity, is located in Cambambe County and has also been supplying the Benguela Province with energy since May 2019 .

history

The area was colonized by the Portuguese in 1604 . After the Portuguese Francisco Inocêncio Coutinho opened an iron foundry in Nova Oeira (now the municipality of Massangano ) in 1771 , which is considered the first metal factory in Africa, industrial development began in the heavily agricultural area.

The place Dondo became the seat of its own district ( concelho ) in 1857 and grew in particular due to the influx of residents from Aldeia do Soba Kambambe, 17 km away. The circle was then named Cambambe.

In 1941 the railway line from Zenza do Itombe to Dondo was opened, a branch of the Luanda Railway . As a result of the improved transport routes, a number of industrial operations (cotton processing, building materials, textile industry) emerged here, especially after the opening of the Cambambe Dam hydropower plant, which had been built in 1958 , in 1960 .

In the course of the Angolan civil war after independence in 1975, all companies completely or largely ceased their activities, with the exception of the hydroelectric power station and the EKA brewery, which was founded in 1969 .

The government has been promoting the resettlement of industrial companies in Cambambe County since 2013 , and the textile industry in particular is now increasingly settling here again. The EKA brewery, which is now part of the Cuca-BGI brewery, is now the largest taxpayer in the province after various expansion stages, together with the hydropower plant (as of 2013).

administration

Cambambe is a district ( Município ) in the Cuanza Norte . The district has an area of 5212 km² with a population of around 104,400 (2019 estimate). The 2014 census showed 90,766 inhabitants.

In the north it is bounded by the districts of Dande and Pango Aluquém , in the east by Golungo Alto , Cazengo and Cacuso , in the south by Libolo and Quiçama , and in the west by Ícolo e Bengo .

The district consists of five municipalities ( Portuguese Comunas, German municipalities):

The capital of Cambambes is Dondo .

economy

The EKA brewery and the Cambambe dam power station are the only companies that have remained in operation to this day after the various industries were dismantled during the Angolan civil war from 1975–2002.

After the former Satec textile factory was demolished in 2012, new textile production facilities with 500 direct jobs were announced on its premises in 2013, a Japanese investment. For this purpose, the district administration has a 200 hectare site that is intended for the settlement of up to 70 companies. The Angolan company Génios Angola has already decided on two production facilities for the food industry . A nationally important center for fish farming was opened in Cambambe in March 2014.

Personalities

The author and poet Alda Lara (1930–1962) died here.
