Golungo Alto is a small town ( Vila ) and a district in northern Angola . The mahogany tree species Khaya anthotheca was first described here in 1859 by Friedrich Welwitsch .

Golungo Alto is the seat of a district of the same name ( Município ) in the province of Cuanza Norte . The district area covers 1989 km² with around 34,000 inhabitants (2014 estimates). From now on, the 2014 census should provide reliable population data.

Four communities (Comunas) make up the Golungo Alto district:

Golungo Alto was connected to the Luanda Railway via a 31 km branch line from 1915 until it was shut down during the Angolan Civil War (1975-2002). While the Luanda Railway was restored and put into operation in 2010, the branch line to Golungo Alto will remain closed.
