The Luanda Railway (Portuguese Caminho de Ferro de Luanda is) a railroad in Angola. It connects the Estação do Bungo train station in the capital Luanda with the provincial capital Malanje over a distance of 424 kilometers . The track has a track width of 1067 mm and overcomes a total difference in height. The train service on the Luanda line is operated by the state "Caminho de Ferro de Luanda, EP".

Branch lines

On the way there is a branch line from Zenza do Itombe to Dondo. The 31-kilometer branch line from Canhoca to Golungo Alto with a gauge of 600 mm has been closed.

Development after the end of the civil war

After the end of the civil war in 2002, plans for the rehabilitation of the line began. With the help of the Chinese companies CR-20 and CIMEK-TEC, the work began in 2005, which cost a total of 60 million kwanza (460 million euros). The entire route from Luanda to Malanje was opened for operation on December 27, 2010, and passenger traffic to Malanje began on January 13, 2011.

There is a wide range of options on the route: long-distance trains, regional trains and suburban trains. Since October 11, 2010, trains have been running hourly between the stations Baia in Viana and Textang in Boavista between 6:40 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

The state-owned company transports around 14,000 passengers a day in suburban traffic alone.
