history

The Jornal de Angola was the first and only daily newspaper in Angola after independence in 1975 until 2008. During the period from 1975 to 1991, in which Angola was a one-party state operating as a socialist, the Jornal de Angola explicitly functioned as an organ of the state or the ruling party, the then Marxist-Leninist MPLA . Even since Angola's transition to (strongly presidentialist) multi-party democracy, the Jornal de Angola has been completely under the influence of the MPLA, which has remained the ruling party due to its electoral success. This constellation has contributed significantly to the fact that a large number of private weekly newspapers have emerged as a counterbalance.
