Libolo is a district ( Município ) in the Cuanza Sul Province in Angola . The district is known nationwide for its football and basketball club and for its statue of the Virgin Mary, which came to Luanda from Fátima in 1967 and has been resting here since 1968, where it has been a destination for pilgrims ever since.

history

Since the 16th century, the Portuguese colonial rulers increasingly pushed for possession of this area as well. There is evidence of persistent popular resistance, particularly against the capture of slaves. Towards the end of the 19th century, the Portuguese intensified their colonization, in line with the imperialist zeitgeist of the epoch. In 1890 they set up an administrative post in Libolo. The renewed local resistance, which increased particularly from 1895, forced the Portuguese colonial troops to build a fortress in Calulo by Lieutenant Pais Brandão in 1897. In 1917 the local population rose up against the colonial rulers who took refuge in the fortress. It was not until 1932 that the area was considered fully controlled and pacified, and today's district was established. The fortress is still a symbol of anti-colonial resistance in the country today.

Since the 1960s in particular, the district has experienced a strong economic boom due to coffee production. Until the outbreak of the Angolan civil war after independence in 1975, Libolo County remained largely peaceful, but afterwards it experienced a decline due to destruction and emigration. Since the end of the civil war in 2002 and the country's increasing economic recovery, the district has once again experienced an economic upturn, in particular due to the resumption of coffee cultivation and the construction of the EN120 national road to Huambo .

Sports

The club CRD Libolo , founded in 1942 and re-established in 2006, is particularly known for its football and basketball team. The CRD has already twice won the highest Angolan football league, the Girabola , while the basketball team was once a cup winner and twice a runner-up. In karate, the CRD won the state championship three times in a row.

The CRD's professional soccer team welcomes its guests to the Estádio Municipal de Calula, a municipal stadium with a capacity of 5,000 .

economy

The most important product of the agricultural district is coffee. 1187 planters grew coffee on 189 plantations in 2012. In 2012 around 1000 tons of coffee were harvested in the district, which meant a slight decrease compared to the previous year.
