Sumbe (until 1975: Novo Redondo ) is the capital of the Cuanza Sul province in Angola . According to official but outdated lists, it has less than 40,000 inhabitants.

history

Sumbe was founded on January 7, 1769 by the Portuguese military and colonial administrator, the Capitão Mor de Muxima José Rodrigues. This was preceded by a decision by the Angolan governor Inocêncio de Sousa Coutinho , who in 1768 commissioned a group of engineers to determine a suitable place to found the place. The place was called Novo Redondo (Eng .: New Redondo, with reference to the Portuguese place Redondo ). In 1785 the place received a stone fortress, in 1811 its first church, and in 1872 a hospital.

Today, however, the rise to a small town ( Vila ) in 1917 is celebrated as the foundation . In 1955 the Portuguese President Craveiro Lopes visited the place, which then became the capital of the Kwanza Sul district. Novo Redondo was elevated to a city ( Cidade ) in 1956 .

After the country gained its independence from Portugal in 1975, the city received its current name.

In the course of the Angolan civil war , units of the UNITA rebel army made an attempt here on March 25, 1984 to conquer the city, which was repulsed by Cuban-Angolan forces.

Sports

On September 10, 2010, the Estádio Municipal do Sumbe Comandante Hoji Ya Henda was opened on the site of the previous municipal stadium , with a tournament of the Angolan professional teams Kabuscorp , 1º de Agosto and CRD Libolo , and the U19 selection of Sporting Lisbon from Portugal. The stadium has a capacity of 3500 and is home to the Andorinhas Futebol Clube do Sumbe football club .

The road, which has been newly built since the mid-2000s, comes from Luanda, 335 km north and leads to Lobito 170 km south, is the most important gateway to the city. The overland buses of the SGO and the regional buses of the TCUL drive to the city.

administration

Sumbe is the seat of a district of the same name ( Municipio ) in the province of Cuanza Sul . The city with around 40,000 inhabitants is also the capital of the province.
