Cuanza Sul (also written "Kwanza Sul") is a province of the African state of Angola . It has about 1,881,873 inhabitants on an area of 55,660 km². Cuanza Sul is located southeast of Luanda and extends from the Atlantic coast in the west to the Cuanza River in the north and east.
The population is generally assigned to the Ovimbundu ethnic group.
history
The province Cuanza Sul (German: Kwanza Süd ) was created by the division of the former Cuanza district on September 15, 1917. It was named after the Cuanza river that crosses it.

The capital of the province is Sumbe , called Novo Redondo during colonial times.

economy
The main branch of the economy is agriculture, which is favored by the altitude, the tropical dry climate and the hydrography . There is great potential in this area, because half of the area of the province (2,857,501 hectares) can be used for agriculture, but so far only 19% of it is used for this purpose (87.5% by smallholders and 12.5% % of large companies). The main products are grain, corn, cassava, coffee, cotton, peanuts, potatoes, soy, tobacco, avocado, pineapple, and other types of fruit and vegetables. There are also deposits of mineral raw materials such as quartz, copper ore, limestone, gold and diamonds.
