Malanje (also Malange ) is a province of the African state Angola . It is known as the "land of the giant sable antelope " ( Palanca negra gigante ).
Location and geography
The province of Malanje is located in the north of Angola, about 300 km east of the capital Luanda at an altitude between 500 and 1500 m. It borders in the northwest on the province of Uíge , in the northeast on the Democratic Republic of the Congo , in the east on Lunda Norte and Lunda Sul , in the south on Bié and Cuanza Sul and in the west on Cuanza Norte .
The extreme north of the province is covered with wet savannah, the larger southern part is a dry savannah . The main rivers are Cuanza in the southwest and Cuango in the northeast. Large areas to the north and south-east of the city of Malanje have been declared protected areas. The largest protected areas in the province are the Reserva Especial do Milando in the north and the Reserva Natural Integral do Luando on the upper reaches of the Cuanza.

The province of Malanje is divided into 14 districts ( Municípios ), which are further divided into 66 municipalities (Comunas). It has around 1.14 million inhabitants (2019 estimate) on an area of 97,602 km². The capital of the province is Malanje .

economy
The province is strongly characterized by agriculture. The most intensively used area in the Malanje Province is the area around the provincial capital. Mainly cotton and sugar cane are grown here. Also, cassava , sweet potatoes , peanuts , rice , soybeans , sunflower and various vegetables are produced.
There are diamonds , limestone , uranium and phosphate raw materials mined in the province. There are also manganese and copper ore deposits.
Tourism has grown in importance. The province is officially counted among the most important tourist regions in the country. Reason is the variety of natural attractions, including the Kalandula Falls , the rock formation of the "Black Stones of Pungo Adongo", two nature reserves, and the National Park Parque Nacional de Cangandala with the domestic here and regarded as a national symbol giant sable antelope , the Palanca Negra Gigante .
