Uíge is a province in the north of the African state Angola .
Location and geography
The province of Uíge is located in the far north of Angola, about 200 km northeast of the capital Luanda . It borders in the north and east on the Democratic Republic of the Congo , in the south on the provinces of Malanje , Cuanza Norte and Bengo and in the west on the province of Zaire .
Most of the province is covered with wet savannah, along the eastern border there are also remnants of tropical rainforest . The main river is the Cuango , which forms the eastern border. There are two larger dams on the southern border with Cuanza Norte.
history
The province of Uíge is one of the most severely affected by the Portuguese colonial war (1961-1975), as it was a main area of action of the Frente Nacional da Libertação de Angola (FNLA). In the following Angolan civil war (1975–2002), the region was less the focus of the warring parties. Uíge has long had major problems with the return of the people who have fled and the restoration of the infrastructure. The extensive reconstruction efforts are now showing initial success.
In October 2004 the province was the center of an outbreak of Marburg fever in Angola, which killed over 200 people.

The province of Uíge has an area of 58,698 km². The capital is the city of Uíge , which bore the Portuguese name Carmona under the colonial administration .
The province is divided into 16 districts ( Municípios ), which are further subdivided into 48 municipalities (Comunas).

The population of the province is estimated at 1.71 million people (2019). The 2014 census showed 1,483,118 inhabitants.
The population almost exclusively belongs to the Bakongo ethnic group .
Economy and Transport
The agricultural production area is around 555,000 hectares. Around 6.2 million tons of agricultural products were produced in 2018, an increase of 7% over the previous year. Uíge's main crop is coffee , along with peanuts , cotton and other products. In addition to copper , the important mineral raw materials also include silver and cobalt .
The main road from Luanda to Kinshasa crosses the province from south to north.
