Negage (also Negaje ) is a city and a district in Angola .

history

Ngage was the Kimbundu name of a local village when Portuguese settlers settled here and founded Negage in 1925. Negage belonged to the administrative post in the district Dimuca Ambaca , Cuanza Norte Province . Later it became a separate administrative post in the district Ambaca before the county in 1955 Bembe in the province of Uige has been assigned. In 1956 it became the seat of its own circle there. Negage was raised to a small town ( Vila ) in 1958 , before it was given town status ( Cidade ) on June 26, 1970 .

With the outbreak of the Portuguese colonial war in Angola in 1961, the Negage airfield became an important air base for the Portuguese armed forces as Aeródromo Base - AB nº3 .

Negage is the seat of a district of the same name ( Município ) in the province of Uíge . The district covers an area of ​​2019 km² with around 230,180 inhabitants (extrapolated estimate 2014). From now on, the 2014 census should provide reliable population data.

Transport and economy

Negage has an airport with the IATA airport code GXG and the ICAO code FNNG. It served the Portuguese Air Force as an operational base in the Portuguese Colonial War (1961–1975).

As part of the infrastructure measures taken by the government after the peace treaty in 2002, various new roads were built up to 2011, which meanwhile connects Negage again with the provincial capital and surrounding towns.

Above all, the improved road conditions are stimulating agriculture in the district, especially in coffee cultivation. Other important cultivated products are cassava , mountain rice , sweet potatoes , beans, corn , bananas and other fruits such as passion fruit , pineapple , goiaba or citrus fruits . Cattle breeding is also gaining in importance, with a registered herd of 1,465 cattle, 27,460 goats, 38,161 sheep and 30,150 poultry in the district (as of spring 2014). There are 50 production cooperatives in the district with 172,253 members and a large number of smallholders and family businesses, of which 17,644 are affiliated to the state Empresa de Desenvolvimento Agrário (EDA, German: Agricultural Development Company). The EDA makes u. a. Offers for further training and distributes seeds.
