Huambo is a province in Angola . With an area of 34,270 km², it is one of the smaller provinces and is located in the center of Angola about 450 km southeast of Luanda . The capital is Huambo , which until 1975 carried the Portuguese place name Nova Lisboa ( New Lisbon ). The Benguela Railway is an important transport link .

Vegetation and geology

A central plateau extends over the province, in which individual rocks rise up. The best known is the Môco in Londuimbali , which at 2,619 m is also the highest point in Angola.

The difference in vegetation between the high plateau and the lower plains is striking. Baobab trees and grasslands are characteristic of the latter .

The soil is generally of poor quality but is rich in mineral deposits including manganese , tungsten , iron , copper , uranium , silver , gold and diamonds . In many areas it is also impoverished by erosion and overuse, but it is better than in other areas in the north, south and east of Angola. Traditional farming, slash and burn, and overpopulation after people left their homes during the Angolan Civil War ( 1975-2002 ) caused significant damage to trees and forests. In addition, wood was used as fuel for the Benguela Railway until the 1980s . In many places, the native forests have been replaced by fast-growing but heavily soil-demanding pine and eucalyptus trees.

climate

While the area is in the tropical climatic zone, the altitude and effects of the Antarctic Current create a temperate climate. The annual temperature difference is small and fluctuates between 17 and 28 ° C, with an average temperature of 22 ° C. During the winter months from May to July, temperatures drop to 8 to 5 ° C. The amount of precipitation, depending on the region, is 800 to 1600 mm. In the plateau, the rainy season begins with short rains in September, continues to rise in October and November, then has an interruption of 2 to 4 weeks in December, January or February and lasts until the end of April. The heaviest rains are usually in November and December.

administration

Huambo is bordered by the province of Cuanza Sul in the northwest, Bié in the north and east, Benguela in the west and Huíla in the south. It is divided into eleven districts, which in turn are subdivided into 37 municipalities (Comunas). The capital of the province is Huambo.

The province has been ruled by a woman for the first time since September 12, 2018. The governor is Joana Lina Ramos Baptista . From 1991 to 1997 she was State Secretary for the Advancement of Women and from 1997 to 1998 Minister of Family and Women. She was also the head of the Angolan Football Association .

The counties of Huambo Province:

population

In the 2014 census, the province had around 2 million inhabitants (15% of the population of Angola), of which around 55% live in the cities, most of them in the capital. The estimate for 2019 is 2.39 million inhabitants. Large population flows into rural areas and deficits in administration make population determination difficult. The 2014 census showed that 52% of the province's residents are 0-14 years old.

Almost all the inhabitants of the province belong to the Ovimbundu ethnic group .

economy

So far, agriculture has been the most important branch of the economy. China in particular is planning major investments in this sector in Huambo. Rice is said to be grown on a large scale.

The discovery of huge deposits of mineral raw materials in April 2019 of around 23 billion tons with contents of rare earth metals in Longonjo County could give the province a major economic boost. The mining of rock structures with mining levels of the metals neodymium and praseodymium is to begin in 2020 by the Angolan company Ferrangol-EP and the Australian company Pensana Metals .
