Zaire is a province of the African state Angola . The province is located in the northwest of the country, on the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo , the former state of Zaire.
geography
The province of Zaire extends on the Atlantic coast north of Luanda between the Loge rivers in the south and the mouth of the Congo in the north. It extends about 300 km inland.
The capital M'Banza Kongo is located in the hilly interior of the province. Other cities are Soyo at the mouth of the Congo, today a center of oil production, Tomboco in the middle of the province, N'Zeto at the mouth of the Mbridge into the Atlantic and Noqui opposite the Congolese border town of Matadi .

The province of Zaire has an area of 40,130 km². The capital of the province is M'banza Kongo , which was called São Salvador do Congo in Portuguese under colonial administration .
The province is divided into six districts ( Municípios ), which are further structured in 37 municipalities (Comunas).

population
Around 700,000 people live in the province of Zaire (2019 estimate). The 2014 census showed 594,428 inhabitants. Almost without exception, the population belongs to the Bakongo ethnic group . The province of Zaire was therefore a stronghold of the FNLA in the 1960s to 1980s . This opposition party, which is now small at the national level, still has a higher share of the vote there than in the rest of the country.
