Calandula (also Kalandula , until 1975 Duque de Bragança ) is a small town and a district in Angola . There are some waterfalls of the Lucala River nearby , especially the well-known Kalandula Falls . They are considered to be the second highest waterfalls in Africa .

The Kalandula Falls

history

The place was founded by Portuguese settlers in the mid-19th century. They called him Duque de Bragança, after the Portuguese King D. Pedro V from the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha , who was also Duke of Braganza . The place was raised to a small town ( Vila ) by the Portuguese colonial administration on September 2, 1929 and the seat of its own district. After independence in 1975, Duque de Bragança dropped its Portuguese place name and has been using its current name ever since.

administration

Calandula is the seat of a district of the same name ( Município ) in the province of Malanje . The district covers 70,037 km² and has around 100,000 inhabitants (2014 estimate). From now on, the 2014 census should provide reliable population data.

The Calandula district is made up of five municipalities (Comunas):

economy

The abundance of water in the district enables productive agriculture. The main crops are cassava , sweet potatoes , peanuts , sesame , corn and citrus fruits . Cattle breeding and fishing should also be mentioned. The work of the agricultural cooperatives in the district is to be supported with the repair and expansion of the irrigation systems. In addition, the district administration promotes cattle breeding with the allocation of goats and sheep. The formerly important coffee cultivation is to gain a foothold again in the future. The construction of a market hall in the district town and the establishment of mills and bakeries in several other localities are also intended to increase food security and economic development in the district. Since 2013, Calandula has also had an agricultural college. With the training of skilled workers, the productivity of agriculture in the district should also be increased.

Tourism has long been of importance here, especially in connection with the Kalandula Falls . In 1940, a pousada was planned based on a design by the Austrian architect Franz Schacherl , which was only built later according to the plans of a Portuguese architect. The inn was in operation until 1974, but was given up after independence in 1975 and the beginning of the Angolan civil war (1975-2002). In 2009, an investor bought the building in order to renovate it in the future and operate it again as a hotel. The district has already had a four-star hotel, the Hotel Yonaka, since 2008, and further hotel and restaurant businesses have been announced. Tourism in the district is generally considered to be about to be reborn.
