List of the Dukes of Braganza

Dukes of Braganza (portug. Bragança), city in northern Portugal.

  • 1442–1461: Alfonso I (1377–1461), illegitimate son of King John I of Portugal , was appointed first Duke of Braganza in 1442 , married in 1380 Beatriz, heir to Nuno Álvares Pereira and in 1420, his second marriage was Constance of Noronha.
  • 1461–1478: Ferdinand I (1403–1478), second Duke of Braganza, son of Duke Alfonso I and Duchess Beatriz, married in 1429 Johanna de Castro.
  • 1478–1483: Ferdinand II (1430–1483, executed), third Duke of Braganza, son of Duke Ferdinand I and Johanna von Castro, married Leonore de Menezes first in 1447 and Princess Elisabeth (Isabel) von in 1472 Portugal, a granddaughter of King Edward I. His younger brother Álvaro de Bragança founded the line of the Dukes of Cadaval .

  • 1483–1532: Jakob (Jaime) (1479–1532), fourth Duke of Braganza, son of Duke Ferdinand II and Princess Elisabeth of Portugal, married Leonore de Mendoza in 1500 and Johanna de Mendoza in 1520.
  • 1532–1563: Teodosius I (1510–1563), fifth Duke of Braganza, son of Duke Jacob and Leonore de Mendoza, married Elisabeth (Isabel) in 1520 and Brites de Lancastre in 1559.
  • 1563–1583: John I (João I) (1543–1583), sixth Duke of Braganza, married Princess Catherine of Portugal (1540–1614), a granddaughter of King Emanuel I , in 1565 .
  • 1583–1630: Teodosius II (1568–1630), seventh Duke of Braganza, son of Duke John I and Catherine of Portugal, married in 1603 Anna de Velasco y Giron.
  • 1630–1656: John II (1604–1656), eighth Duke of Braganza, son of Duke Teodosius II and Anna de Velasco y Giron, married Luisa de Gusmão in 1633, ascended the Portuguese throne in 1640 as John IV .

During the time in which the House of Braganza and the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha held the Portuguese throne (1640–1910), the respective Portuguese heir to the throne held the title of Duke of Braganza. In 1836 the title was given to Ferdinand II (Portugal) as Prince Consort at the wedding , before he later became Titular King .

After his abdication as Emperor of Brazil in 1831, Peter IV (= Emperor Peter I of Brazil) again assumed the title of Duke of Braganza, which he held until his death in 1834.

The head of the legitimist line of the House of Braganza, i.e. the descendants of the exiled King Michael I , also held the title of Duke of Braganza, which was not recognized by the Portuguese kings until 1921:

  • Michael Maria Carlos (1853–1927), Duke of Braganza, son of King Michael of Portugal and Princess Adelheid von Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg. Marries Elisabeth von Thurn und Taxis in 1877and Marie Therese, Princess von Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg in 1893
  • Duarte Nuno (1907–1976), Duke of Braganza, son of Duke Michael von Braganza and Princess Marie Therese. In 1942 she married Maria Francisca of Orleans and Braganza, Princess of Brazil, a great-granddaughter of Emperor Peter II of Brazil. In 1921 he was recognized by the last Portuguese king, Emanuel II, who was in exile, as his successor and thus head of the House of Braganza.
  • Duarte Pio (* 1945), Duke of Braganza, current head of the House of Braganza, he married Isabel Inês de Castro Curvelo de Herédia in 1995.
