Michael of Braganza
Michael and Miguel Maria Carlos Egídio Constantino Gabriel Rafael Gonzaga Francisco de Paula e de Assis Januário von Braganza , led by the Portuguese Legitimists as the 22nd Duke of Braganza (born September 19, 1853 in Kleinheubach ; † October 11, 1927 in Seebenstein , Austria ), was the eldest son of King Michael I of Portugal and his wife Adelheid von Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg and the Portuguese pretender to the throne .
Life
After studying in Metz and Innsbruck , Duke Michael von Braganza served as an officer in the Austro-Hungarian army and retired from active service when Portugal entered the First World War . Since October 12, 1917 he held the rank of kuk field marshal lieutenant . From then on he was involved in the supranational Order of Malta . Since he was not allowed to enter Portugal, he lived with his family in the prelate building of Bronnbach Monastery (today Wertheim ), from 1917 mainly on the (no longer existing) New Castle in Seebenstein near Vienna, where Duke Michael died in 1927. He was transferred to Bronnbach and buried in front of the choir area of the monastery church of the Assumption of Mary. His two sons from his first marriage in 1923 had already been transferred and buried there.

On October 17, 1877, Miguel married Princess Elisabeth von Thurn und Taxis (1860–1881) , niece of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, in Regensburg . They had three children:

After the early death of his first wife, he married his cousin Princess Maria Theresia zu Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg (1870–1935) on November 8, 1893 at Schloss Kleinheubach . They had eight children:

On July 31, 1920, the exiled King of Portugal Emanuel II determined in his will the son of Michael of Braganza, Duarte II Nuno (1907-1976) as his successor as head of the family. His son, Duarte Pius von Braganza (* 1945), is today's (2017) pretender to the throne and head of the House of Braganza.
