Seebenstein is a municipality with 1,438 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Neunkirchen district in Lower Austria .
geography
Seebenstein is located in the industrial district in Lower Austria. The place is in the Bucklige Welt region . The area of the municipality covers 9.15 square kilometers, about 62% of the area is forested. The Seebenstein-Türkensturz Nature Park is located in the municipality .
Community structure
The municipality is divided into three villages (residents as of January 1, 2020):
- Schiltern (487 Ew.)
- Seebenstein (949 Ew.)
- Sollgraben (2 Ew.)
The community consists of two cadastral communities (area as of December 31, 2019):
- Schiltern (215.64 ha)
- Seebenstein (693.34 ha)

history
In ancient times, the area was part of the Noricum province .
On April 16, 1972, Seebenstein was the epicenter of the magnitude 5.3 earthquake that was felt as far as Vienna.

According to the data of the 2001 census , 84.4% of the population were Roman Catholic , 3.8% Protestant , 0.5% Muslim , 0.3% belonged to Orthodox churches , and 9.4% of the population had no religious denomination.

coat of arms
The municipality of Seebenstein was given a municipal coat of arms by resolution of the Lower Austrian state government on November 14, 1978.
Blazon :
- "In a golden shield over a blue background, a silver, red-roofed tower with three black round windows standing on a gray rock, which is covered with a red shield with two golden interlocking half-mill wheels."
At the same time, the “yellow-white-blue” colors set by the Seebenstein commune council were approved.
Personalities
- Michael of Braganza was like his father Michael I of Portugal (1802–1866) pretender to the throne of Portugal . Due to his close relationship with the House of Habsburg , at the end of the century he took exile in Seebenstein Castle, which he lived in permanently from 1917 and where he died on October 11, 1927.
