Richard Kurt Donin

Richard Kurt Donin (born June 4, 1881 in Vienna ; † May 1, 1963 there ) was an Austrian art historian and lawyer .

Life

Donin was the son of a paper mill owner from Kautzen in the Waldviertel and was orphaned at an early age. He attended the Stiftsgymnasium Melk , where the later artists Leopold Blauensteiner and Rudolf Junk were among his classmates. He then studied law and later art history and classical archeology , and received his doctorate in 1905 , Dr. iur. and in 1913 Dr. phil. In 1915 he founded the Lower Austrian Youth Welfare Office. In 1917 he was appointed curator of the Central Commission for the Preservation of Monuments, and from 1929 he worked in the Ministry of Education. After 1945 he also taught as a professor of art history at the State Graphic Training and Research Institute in Vienna. From 1945 until his death he was President of the Society for Comparative Art Research .

In his art-historical research he specialized in the history of Austrian architecture. While he was initially concerned with the Romanesque , he later increasingly dealt with Gothic architecture. He also dealt intensively with the relationship between Austrian and Italian art.

Others

Donin's scientific estate is in the manuscript collection of the Vienna Library . In 1966, Doningasse in Vienna- Donaustadt (22nd district) was named after him. Richard Kurt Donin was a great-nephew of the writer and priest Ludwig Donin (1810–1876).
