Sanatorium "Recreation Home Breitenstein"
In Breitenstein, almost forgotten today, there was a remarkable public sanatorium, the Breitenstein sanatorium and recreation home built in several stages from 1903 . It was one of the partially world-famous sanatoriums (albeit not an explicit lung sanatorium , such as the Wienerwald sanatorium , the Felbring convalescent home, the Strengberg sanatorium, or the Hochegg sanatorium, to name but the best known) in the eastern Alpine foothills and at the same time the first of the Henriette Weiss, a highly socially committed public sanatorium. During the First World War , Henriette Weiss (1864–1931), historically one of the most important advocates of nursing training for women, founded the Wällischhof rest homes in Maria Enzersdorf and Sans Souci in Mauer near Vienna, and in 1914 the Vienna War Forest School for children. After the First World War, Weiss succeeded as head of the Alland sanatorium, which was badly damaged by the war . In 1928, the care home for the elderly was launched in Baden near Vienna .
“Aryanized” in 1938 , the Breitenstein sanatorium was badly affected during the Nazi era and - as a result of the illegal appropriation - was left to decay in the decades after the Second World War. In misjudgment of its historical value, the sanatorium located at 880 m above sea level, including the architecturally not uninteresting part from 1908, had to be demolished in winter 2006/07 at the instigation of the community.
