Mönichkirchen is a market town in the Neunkirchen district with 618 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) and is located in the southeast of the Austrian state of Lower Austria on the border with Styria .

Mönichkirchen is located at the eastern end of the Wechselgebirge in the south-eastern industrial district on the border with Styria. The area of ​​the market municipality covers 16.27 km², 68.34% of the municipality area is forested.

In ancient times, the area was part of the Noricum province . The Mönichkirchen area has been inhabited at least since the early Middle Ages. Around 1130, the Johanniter am Hartberg built a hospital to take care of pilgrims , the church organization of which was subordinate to the Archdiocese of Salzburg . Mönichkirchen has been using this name since the 12th century , referring to the monks who settled here. In the later Middle Ages the place developed into one of the oldest Marian pilgrimage sites in Austria. Otherwise, rural life prevailed in grouped farms ("Oberdorf", "Unterdorf").

During the reign of Joseph II in the second half of the 18th century, the pilgrimage sites disappeared and the population increased - in 1823 there were 174 inhabitants. In 1865 a major fire raged, which killed a large part of the village.

In the 19th century, with the opening of the Wechselbahn in 1881, the first tourism appeared. Since the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Mönichkirchen has been known and appreciated as a high-altitude health resort and vantage point. The numerous historical villas and splendid buildings are still reminiscent of the imperial era and are still looked after and kept alive.

The area around Mönichkirchen has always been a borderland and was also fought over in World War II, as can be seen in a military cemetery on the nearby Hochwechsel .

The tunnels of the Wechselbahn near Mönichkirchen were used by Adolf Hitler's mobile Führer headquarters “Spring Storm” from April 12 to 25, 1941, as a place to lead the Balkan campaign.

After the Second World War, the demarcation line between the Soviet occupation zone (Lower Austria) and the British zone (Styria) ran directly through the town. There is also a historical boundary stone above the diving stream directly on the B 54 towards Schaueregg.

According to the sample census from 2006, the economic sectors of material goods production (15.4% of the workforce), agriculture and forestry (12.0%) as well as transport and communication (12.0%) dominated the Mönichkirchen population.

According to a survey, there were 40 agricultural and forestry holdings in 1999; according to the 2001 census, there were 46 non-agricultural workplaces. According to the 2001 census, the number of people in employment at the place of residence was 263. The employment rate in 2001 was 43.82%, in 2006 it was 44.6%.

• The poet Anton Wildgans immortalized Mönichkirchen under the name “Übelbach” in his epic “Kirbisch or The Gendarme, Shame and Luck”. Although he painted a by no means flattering picture of the inhabitants, he is still remembered today by annual readings as an almost local. He is also still highly revered among the local population, not least because of his often attested bond with Mönichkirchen. For some time now, there has been a newly created Anton Wildgans Trail, which is dedicated to the person of the poet.
• In Mönichkirchen there is the WPM youth association Mönichkirchen to promote youth culture and two music associations of a traditional nature. Since 2006 the youth club has organized the rock music event “Rocky Mountain Festival” every summer .

The area immediately around Mönichkirchen is a ski area. In this regard, Mönichkirchen is connected to the town of Mariensee, which belongs to the municipality of Aspangberg-Sankt Peter, via a ski swing. The total length of the slopes is about 13 km. The two places currently have three chair lifts and one pommel lift.

There are also a number of hiking trails as well as a climbing park and a wellness park.

In Mönichkirchen there is a model park designed by a single person . The miniatures are primarily replicas of well-known or typical buildings, mainly from Austria, as well as partly animated re-enactments of folkloric and biblical scenes. The park contains the world's largest mechanical landscape nativity scene, which is also entered in the Guinness Book of Records .
