Thermenbahn to Fehring

The Wechselbahn is a railway line in Lower Austria and Styria from Aspang to Friedberg . It connects the Aspangbahn with the Thermenbahn (from Friedberg to Fehring ) and the Pinkatalbahn (from Friedberg to Oberwart ).

The railway line is named after the mountain range of the Wechsel , over which it leads to its edge.

history

Opening of the Wechselbahn, 1910

The construction of the Wechselbahn took place in the course of the construction of the "New Alpine Railways" with which the Austro-Hungarian state tried to break the transport monopoly of the private southern railway company to Trieste. The railway line opened on October 11, 1910 and opened to traffic the following day. 16 workers were killed and more than 1,600 people were injured during construction.

The Hartberg tunnel near Mönichkirchen was used by the moving Führer headquarters “Spring Storm” from April 1941 as a place to lead the Balkan campaign.

vehicles

Since the beginning of 2005, the railcars ÖBB 5022 (Desiro) from Siemens and VT 5047 have been used on the passenger route, and the 2016 Hercules series on locomotive-hauled trains (mostly city shuttle trains ) . Freight trains are usually also hauled with this type. Up to this point in time, the VT 5047 and VT 5147 and the locomotives of the 2143 and 2043 series were running on the route .
