The ÖBB series 2043 is a diesel locomotive that was procured in large numbers from the 1960s and made a significant contribution to the displacement of the steam locomotive from the non-electrified ÖBB lines. The last locomotives in this series were shut down in early 2020.

The ÖBB tried to replace steam locomotives with diesel traction vehicles at the end of the 1940s . However, the construction of high-performance diesel engines was still impossible until the end of the 1950s due to Austrian industry suffering from the consequences of the war. Due to the foreign exchange situation, a purchase abroad was only possible after 1955 and only to a very limited extent. Until 1962, the ÖBB could only procure 20 diesel-electric locomotives of the 2045 series from the domestic manufacturer Simmering-Graz-Pauker with two 500-hp diesel engines and 18 likewise diesel-electric locomotives of the 2050 series (GM license). At the beginning of the 1960s, the ÖBB planned a large procurement program for (branch line) mainline diesel locomotives (the main lines should be electrified as soon as possible). In 1962, Jenbacher Werke (JW) supplied a prototype called 2043.01 and renamed 2043.501 at the start of series delivery (name Jenbach DH 1500) with hydrodynamic power transmission and single-axle drive. The later series machines were further developed from this prototype, without the single-axle drive.

The series 2043 locomotives were built from 1964 as light universal locomotives for non-electrified routes in Austria. With an axle pressure of only 17 t, it was designed primarily for branch lines, but had to help out for a long time in heavy main line service due to the lack of stronger types. A total of 77 locomotives of this series were delivered to the ÖBB. Simmering-Graz-Pauker also produced 77 locomotives from the sister series 2143 , which differ in terms of their different engines and external ventilation grilles.

With new deliveries of locomotives of the 2016 series (Herkules) from 2002, the 2043, which are now outdated and no longer meet the requirements, have become superfluous and have largely been eliminated as a result. However, individual machines were still in use on a case-by-case basis in 2018.

The substructure type 2043.5 differs slightly from other machines in the series. Four 2043er (055, 056, 057 and 058) were specially equipped for steep sections on the Erzbergbahn in 1978 with a speed-dependent magnetic rail brake and a speed monitoring device including an additional speedometer for the descent and renumbered to 2043 555, 556, 557 and 558. At the beginning, these locomotives were only to be found in freight traffic; from June 2, 1985, a scheduled pair of passenger trains (4103-4104) was hauled for the first time. Since the passenger frequency fell sharply in the next few years, the passenger trains were again run with 5081.5 series rail buses from February 16, 1987. Then all locomotives were relocated from Vordernberg to Knittelfeld. In the course of major repairs, the Erzberg special equipment was removed from the locomotives 2043.556 (1993), 2043.557 (1993) and 2043.558 (2001) and the vehicles were numbered back. Only 2043 555 is still equipped with the special equipment and has belonged to the ÖGEG since mid-2017 .

The 2043.53, which has been withdrawn from normal operation, is the towing vehicle of the Reblaus-Express at NÖVOG in the Wald- / Weinviertel. Other machines in the series were used in nostalgia and by private rail companies.

The prototype locomotive 2043.01 is on display as a non-operational showpiece in the Knittelfeld Railway Museum. One side and one front were painted in the original fir-green and blood-orange color scheme of the 70s and 80s.

The 2043 series is powered by a valveless twelve-cylinder two-stroke diesel engine (JW's own design) with a set output of 1104 kW (1500 hp). A valveless eight-cylinder two-stroke diesel engine drives the train heating generator, which supplies cars with electricity (heating / battery charging). A third two-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine drives a compressor to generate compressed air, which is required, for example, to start the diesel engine or the braking system. Each engine can be operated on its own.

The power transmission takes place with a hydraulic transmission from Voith . 2043.01–14 received a gearbox with three converter gears, from 2043.15 a two-converter gearbox from Voith St. Pölten was installed.

A fir green color was chosen as the top coat of the locomotive body by 2043.22. The following machines received a blood orange colored locomotive body , whereby the 2043.23 and 2043.24 had a gray frame. In the course of the 1980s, in the course of repainting during main inspections, a traffic red color was added.
