ÖGEG Steyrtalbahn: Grünburg station

The Austrian Society for Railway History (ÖGEG) is an Austrian association that emerged from a group of railway enthusiasts who came together around 1971 to look after the last still active steam locomotives at the ÖBB site in Linz in their free time .

history

ÖGEG locomotive of the ÖBB 657 series in Timelkam

It was founded in Linz in 1974, with the aim of taking over one of the previously serviced steam locomotives in its own possession, as well as maintaining the Florianerbahn as a museum railway. In the following years, the ÖGEG acquired several locomotives that had been decommissioned by the ÖBB, of which the ÖBB 93.1455 was the first to run on ÖBB tracks on its own in 1978. In the following years, additional locomotives were refurbished in rented premises in the Amstetten boiler house of ÖBB, some of which were presented to a broader audience in 1987 on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Austrian railways at vehicle parades in Strasshof on the Nordbahn and vehicle shows.

In the 1980s, the ÖGEG succeeded in acquiring a class 142 locomotive in Romania . This series is a Romanian license replica of the 214 or 12 series , the largest and most powerful steam locomotive of Austrian design. It was put back into operation in 1993. After the fall of the Iron Curtain , numerous locomotives, some of which were in good condition, could be purchased in Eastern Europe, primarily in Romania, but also in the former GDR. Because of this, the association was also criticized because financial resources were also raised for several German locomotives without any connection with the history of the railway in Austria. However, these locomotives could be used successfully in front of commercial special trains. With the retirement of old locomotives at the ÖBB from around the beginning of the 90s, the ÖGEG also acquired numerous electric and diesel traction vehicles.

The historic ÖGEG railway vehicles are in use today in the ÖBB network, on Austrian private railways and also abroad.

The Florianerbahn has since been spun off from the ÖGEG and converted into an independent company.

Today the ÖGEG owns two lines of its own, so it operates a 17 km long section of the Steyrtalbahn from Steyr Lokalbahnhof to Grünburg . The oldest narrow-gauge railway in Austria with a gauge of 760 mm, which was discontinued in 1982, was reopened in 1985 as a museum railway. Today the Steyrtalbahn has eight steam locomotives.

In 1995, special trips were carried out for the first time on the former WTK (Wolfsegg Traunthaler) coal railway from Timelkam to Ampflwang . Then the Ampflwang railway was taken over, it is today the standard gauge museum railway of the ÖGEG and feeder to the railway museum in Ampflwang.

Since 1995 the ÖGEG has also been the owner of the last steam passenger ship of the Austrian Danube Shipping, the Schönbrunn .

Since 1995 the association has also been the main shareholder of the Austrian Society for Railway History GmbH. Another major partner is Günther Oberbreyer.

Lokpark Ampflwang, Upper Austrian Railway and Mining Museum

Roundhouse in Ampflwang

The railway museum in Ampflwang in the Hausruckwald houses the association's extensive collection of steam locomotives. It is located in a former WTK mining facility at the end of the former coal railway. In 2005 the Ampflwang Railway Museum received the turntable of the former Rosenheim depot and the transfer table of the former SGP plant from Vienna-Simmering. In addition, a new roundhouse was built around the turntable. The railway museum was the main venue for the Upper Austrian provincial exhibition in 2006 under the motto “Coal and Steam”.
