The class 01.5 includes express train locomotives of the Deutsche Reichsbahn in the GDR that were converted from the DR class 01 .
history
As the class 01 locomotives were still indispensable in heavy passenger train traffic, but the machines, frames and boilers were worn out, a replacement was necessary. From 1962, 35 machines of this series were modernized in the Meiningen RAW (in GDR parlance : reconstructed ). As with the reconstruction of the DB , only locomotives with reinforced brakes (from 01 102) and 1000 mm wheel sets were used.
The renovation not only included the installation of a new welded boiler with two sections , but the entire locomotive was renewed. The most striking external feature was the continuous dome cladding , copied from the ČSD series 477.0 , which gave the locomotives a modern, sleek appearance. The large smoke deflectors were also replaced by smaller ones that were beveled at the top at the front.
The new boiler made the so-called Reko-01 one of the most powerful German express train steam locomotives of the post-war period. In addition to a combustion chamber and the well-known mixing preheater type IfS, the 01.5 boiler was equipped with three full-lift boiler safety valves (type Ackermann, NW 60). The machines received Trofimoff slides and, apart from 01 501 and 01 520, new cylinders in welded construction. In addition, the locomotives received a new, welded driver's cab in a standard design with upholstered seats, wet steam side-draft regulators and other improvements to the working conditions for the locomotive staff as well as an Indusi . This was necessary for cross-border traffic to Bebra or Hamburg-Altona and traffic on the Dresden - Berlin route . Because the coupled wheel sets on many machines had to be replaced due to broken spokes, eight copies were fitted with boxpok wheels made of cast steel , as they were known from locomotives from the Soviet Union and the USA . Due to manufacturing defects, their run was not always satisfactory and they were later exchanged for new spoked wheels.
From road number 01 519, all locomotives received a main oil firing system during the conversion , which enabled a further increase in performance. With the exception of the seven locomotives of the Berlin Ostbahnhof depot, all other locomotives were later retrofitted with main oil firing. 13.5 m³ of heavy fuel oil could be carried in the tender . Each of the locomotives was originally supposed to remain in operation for two maintenance periods (six years each), which they all exceeded. In the course of the oil crisis at the beginning of the 1980s, all class 01.5 locomotives with main oil firing were shut down. After retiring from service, some locomotives were used as heating locomotives .
When the locomotives were redesigned in 1970, the oil-fired locomotives were listed as 01.05, the coal-fired locomotives with the serial number increased by 1000 as 01.15.
The 01 0531-2 received grate firing in 1984 and was then back in the operational stock of the DR as a traditional locomotive with the number 01 1531-1 . 01 519 was refurbished from a stationary heating system to a fully operational locomotive in 1990–91 . It was sold to Switzerland in 1991. In 1996 the locomotive was bought by the Zollernbahn railway friends and was refurbished in Rottweil after a long period of storage . It has been back in operation since autumn 2015.
Six class 01.5 steam locomotives were preserved (as of March 2010): 01 509, 01 514, 01 518, 01 519, 01 531, 01 533.
Accidents
The 01 516 back then with the EDP number 01 1516-2, acquired by the boiler explosion in Bitterfeld notoriety when her boiler at the local railway station on November 27, 1977 due to lack of water zerknallte . This was the last boom in Germany so far. Such an accident actually seemed unimaginable even then, as the technical condition of boilers was reliably monitored and it was believed that one could trust that the appropriately trained staff - also in their own interest - observed the relevant safety regulations.
In the spring of 1978, an attempt was made to determine the cause of the accident by means of a comparison drive with experienced personnel. The unpublished investigation report by the DR revealed that the scheduled train driver was retraining to become an electric locomotive driver and had been replaced by a very committed train driver. Since the stoker formed a well-rehearsed team with his regular train driver, the situation was unusual for him and, due to a lack of communication, led to a lack of water at the entrance to Bitterfeld station.
The accident had no effect on the continued use of steam locomotives in the GDR.
