Long boiler
A long boiler is part of the boiler of a steam locomotive . It is divided into sections, which are individually called the boiler section .
The long boiler connects to the standing boiler . The transition is formed by the so-called boot jack plate. The cylindrical long boiler is divided into several boiler sections. In older boilers, these are pushed telescopically over one another and riveted together. In newer boilers, they are butt welded together. The first boiler section of the long boiler, which is attached to the rear boiler, is usually conical and is also called transition section. The boiler plate thickness depends on the boiler pressure, the boiler size and the material.
In the long boiler there are pipes that guide the combustion gases from the fire box into the smoke chamber . The gases give off their heat to the boiler feed water that surrounds the pipes. The long boiler is about 75% to 80% filled with water. The heat heats the water so that steam is formed and boiler pressure is created. The steam is taken from a steam dome on top of the top of the boiler.
With the simpler and older type of wet steam locomotive, the steam from the steam dome is used directly for the drive and fed to the engine . The pipes of the long boiler are called heating or boiler pipes and all have the same diameter.
The more heat-efficient superheated steam locomotive has smoke and heating pipes. The heating pipes have a smaller outer diameter between 44.5 mm and 79 mm and have the same task as with the wet steam locomotive. With an outside diameter of between 118 mm and 179 mm, the smoke pipes are larger than the heating pipes and also have the superheater pipes on the inside . The superheater tubes are bent into a U-shape. In contrast to the wet steam locomotive, the steam is passed through the long boiler via the superheater pipes and further heated to superheated steam .
