The ÖBB 2045 was a diesel locomotive series of the Austrian Federal Railways .
history
After most of the Austrian route network was navigable again after the Second World War , the Austrian Federal Railways needed new locomotives . This led to the construction of the 2045 series, the first post-war diesel locomotive series. The locomotives were based on US diesel locomotives in terms of their appearance, with no end driver's cabs and the diesel-electric drive concept . However, this design was no longer used in later new designs - the 2045 series was therefore a special design (with the exception of the 2050 series , which was also diesel-electric). Twenty locomotives of the 2045 series were built by Simmering-Graz-Pauker and delivered to the ÖBB between 1952 and 1955. The first locomotives were delivered in a brown paint scheme, which was later replaced by a fir green paint scheme. The locomotives were finally given a blood orange (Jaffa) paint job, which they kept until they were retired. A conversion of the radiators also changed the appearance of the locomotives, ventilation openings were clad in sheet metal and superstructures were attached to the stems for better soundproofing of the diesel engines.
The locomotives of the 2045 series were originally used on the Semmering Railway . Other uses on main lines were the Pyhrn Railway . They were later replaced by these higher-quality services and used on branch lines in passenger and freight traffic. The last representative in the 2045 series was retired on May 1, 1993. Seven locomotives have survived to this day.
construction
The welded frame is supported on the two bogies . In the middle there is a driver's cab, to which two stems of the same length are connected, each of which houses a complete drive system.
technical features
Both drive systems consist of an S12a (500 HP) engine , a generator and the auxiliary units. Power is transmitted electrically by means of a BBC spring drive. The locomotives have a manual and a direct-acting air pressure brake as well as a safety driving circuit .
