The tabby saw blade is an approx. 3–9 cm wide wood-dwelling mushroom, with an initially beaked, later funnel-shaped hat and a 3–9 cm long, 4–10 mm wide, often curved handle that is central to a little eccentric, following itself tapered at the bottom and with a long "root" stuck deep in the wood. The top of the hat is almost black in young specimens, while the blackish layer tears as the fruiting body grows into attached, brown-blackish hairy scales, which give the fungus its characteristic, tabby appearance. The edge of the hat is initially rolled up, later it is often cracked. The lamellas, which are crowded and run down the stalk, are narrow and white in young fruiting bodies. They yellow in older specimens via lemon yellow to ocher colored. The cutting edge of the lamellae is initially fine-grained and somewhat sawn, then tears as it grows fringed. The stalk is white in the upper area, below it is brownish to blackish dotted or finely scaly, the veil belt is quickly transient. The fruiting bodies appear singly or in tufts. The flesh is tough, white and very thin.

ecology

The tabby saw blade is a wood-dwelling saprophyte that colonizes hardwoods, in Germany the most important substrates are poplar and willow species , besides other hardwoods are also colonized. The woods populated by the tabby saw blade are often close to the water or are partly in the water. The fungus colonizes different types of alluvial forest in particular, it loves warmth and occurs particularly in climatically favorable river valleys. Outside the alluvial forests, the fungus can be found in parks, on roadsides and similar locations.

distribution

The species is apparently cosmopolitan, in the Holarctic it occurs in warmer to temperate regions. In Germany the tabby saw blade is widespread but irregularly in climatically favorable places.

meaning

The tabby saw blade is insignificant as a wood dweller. As an edible mushroom, it is only suitable when it is very young because it quickly becomes bitter and tough.
