The family Stielporlingsverwandte (Polyporaceae) belongs to the mushrooms .

The flesh of the fruit bodies is soft to tough. The vast majority of members of this family have pores on the underside of the hat, but there are also species with lamellas (tangles, saw blades) or mushrooms with lamellar-like structures (tangled leaves). The spore powder of the stem porlet relatives has a white color, cystidia do not occur. Some species are stalked, in other species the stalk is missing or attached to the side. Many species grow console-shaped .

Most species are saprobionts on dead wood , some species can also parasitize living trees and other woody plants .

Because of the texture of their meat, most porlings are not considered edible mushrooms . Exceptions are the Sulfur Porling ( Laetiporus sulphureus ) and the Scaly Porling ( Polyporus squamosus ), which are edible when young, but especially the Sclerotia Pedunculate Porling . The traditional Chinese medicine uses some species as medicinal mushrooms such as Trametes versicolor ( Trametes versicolor ), the calibration hare ( Polyporus umbellatus ) or tinder fungus ( Fomes fomentarius ) as it is a kind of antibiotic contained. The man from Tisenjoch also carried such mushrooms with him, presumably as a medicine.
