The Friedberg railway station is a railway junction and station of the Styrian town of Friedberg . This is where the Wechselbahn , Thermenbahn and Pinkatalbahn meet. It is equipped with four platform tracks, a historic station building , a goods shed that is no longer in use, and a locomotive shed.

history

Friedberg was opened up on October 15, 1905 by the Hartberg – Friedberg local railway , which in turn was the continuation of the previously opened Fehring – Fürstenfeld (1885) and Fürstenfeld – Hartberg (1891) railway sections. In 1910 the continuation followed via the change to Aspang , which created a continuous connection from Graz via Gleisdorf and Fehring and the Aspangbahn, which was completed in 1881, to Vienna.

As a result of the Paris peace treaties, the nearby Burgenland, which had previously belonged to Hungary, fell to Austria and accordingly demanded new connections that corresponded to the changed political conditions. With the construction of a 15.6 kilometer branch of the Wechselbahn from Friedberg to Altpinkafeld in 1925, the connection to the Pinkatalbahn, which had been in existence since 1888, via Oberwart to Szombathely (Steinamanger) was established. In this context, the Friedberg station was expanded and a simple coaling system was set up for the maintenance of the locomotives . The traffic over the new border to Hungary was stopped at the time of communism in 1953.

On August 1, 2011, the ÖBB stopped passenger traffic on the remaining section of the Pinkatalbahn to Oberwart. Since then, only one pair of freight trains has been running on the Pinkatalbahn on weekdays except Saturdays.
