List of train stations in Austria |
The Payerbach-Reichenau station is the station of the communities Payerbach and Reichenau an der Rax . It is part of the Semmering Railway and was opened in 1854. From 1926 the station was also the starting point for passenger trains on the narrow-gauge Höllentalbahn to Hirschwang an der Rax , which was already in operation in 1918, initially as a material web for a paper factory. The Payerbach-Reichenau station gained in importance, especially for weekend excursions to the Rax and the Rax cable car . To make the change even easier, the Höllentalbahn was extended by 125 m in 1927 to the entrance building of the station and a pedestrian tunnel was created to the tracks of the Südbahn. 1963 the passenger traffic of the Höllentalbahn was stopped. Since 1979, the route has been operated as a museum railroad again for passenger traffic on weekends. The direct connection at the Payerbach-Reichenau train station has been dismantled, however, and those changing to the Höllentalbahn have to walk around 400 m.
The station is still the starting point for most regional trains to Vienna and most regional trains to Mürzzuschlag. Some long-distance trains also stop during the Reichenau Festival . Otherwise the station has lost its former importance for long-distance traffic. In 1974, for example, there were still direct connections from Rome and Athens .
Built with the Semmering Railway as a provisional facility, an independent station for Payerbach was built in 1875. The railway station experienced a particular boom through the imperial house, for which a separate waiting room was even set up. In the years 2006 to 2008 the station was rebuilt as part of the station offensive, but the historic station building, which is under monument protection , was largely preserved.
