Sophie Amalie Adelheid Luise Johanne Leopoldine Princess von Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg (born April 3, 1831 in Kleinheubach ; †  December 16, 1909 in Ryde , Isle of Wight , Great Britain ) was a daughter of Hereditary Prince Konstantin zu Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg and a princess Marie Agnes of Hohenlohe-Langenburg .

Life

Adelheid von Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg married King Michael I of Portugal, son of Johann VI, at Löwenstein Castle in 1851 . de Bragança , King of Portugal and Brazil and his wife Charlotte Johanna of Spain . Since Michael had already lost the Portuguese throne at the time of his marriage (cf. Miguelistenkrieg ) and was living in exile, Adelheid never ascended the Portuguese throne. For the Portuguese Legitimists (ie the followers of Michael I), however, she was the rightful queen of the country.

As a widow, Princess Adelheid became a Benedictine nun in the monastery of Sainte-Cécile de Solesmes in France in 1895 , which moved to the English island of Wight in 1901 . In the year of her death, 1909, her granddaughter, who later became Empress Zita of Austria, came to receive the finishing touches to her upbringing from her grandmother. Particular emphasis was placed on Latin, philosophy, history and music. This educational activity was the last of Princess Adelheid, who at that time was the prioress of the convent. Princess Zita left there shortly before her death.

Princess Adelheid died in December 1909; Her and her husband's corpses were transferred to Lisbon in 1967 , where they were buried in the São Vicente de Fora monastery in the pantheon of the House of Braganza . She is the ancestor of several European royal houses. She is the great-grandmother of today's (2013) Portuguese pretender to the throne and head of the House of Braganza , Duarte Pius von Braganza , the great-great-grandmother of the Austrian pretender to the throne and head of the ore house of Habsburg-Lothringen , Karl Habsburg-Lothringen , the Bavarian pretender to the throne and head of the house Wittelsbach , Franz von Bayern and the Luxembourg Grand Duke Henri as well as great-great-great-grandmother of the Belgian King Philippe .

Her brother was Prince Charles VI. to Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg (1834–1921), who became a Dominican father as a widower .
