Maria Anna do Carmo de Bragança (Portuguese Dona Maria Ana do Carmo Henrique Teresa Adelaide Joana Carolina Inês Sofia Eulália Leopoldina Isabel Bernardina Micaela Gabriela Rafaela Francisca de Assis e de Paula Inácia Gonzaga de Bragança ) (born July 13, 1861 in Bronnbach an der Tauber, now: Wertheim ; † July 31, 1942 in New York ) was an infanta of Portugal from the House of Braganza , by marriage Grand Duchess of Luxembourg and Duchess of Nassau , and regent of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg from 1908 to 1912.

Life

Infanta Maria Anna was a daughter of King Michael I of Portugal and Princess Adelheid von Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg .

On June 21, 1893, at Fischhorn Castle near Zell am See , she married Hereditary Grand Duke Wilhelm of Luxembourg, from 1905 Grand Duke Wilhelm IV (1852–1912), son of Grand Duke Adolf of Luxembourg and Princess Adelheid Marie of Anhalt-Dessau .

Marked by a serious illness, Wilhelm appointed his wife as governor in the Grand Duchy in 1908, before Grand Duchess Maria Anna was appointed regent on November 13, 1908. The Grand Duchess held this office until the death of Grand Duke Wilhelm on February 25, 1912, before exercising a second reign until her daughter Grand Duchess Marie-Adelheid came of age on June 15, 1912.

Grand Duchess Maria Anna died at the age of 81 in 1942 in New York City, where she found refuge after the German occupation of Luxembourg . Her final resting place is in the crypt of Luxembourg Cathedral .
