Leonhard Scherg

Leonhard Scherg (born July 16, 1944 in Miltenberg ) is a German local politician ( CSU ) and homeland researcher . He is the former mayor and honorary citizen of the Lower Franconian town of Marktheidenfeld in the Main-Spessart district and the author of regional history publications.

Life

Leonhard Scherg has been married to the general practitioner Christiane Scherg-Zeisner since 1971 and has three sons. He grew up in Reistenhausen (today Collenberg), attended elementary school there, later the grammar school with upper secondary school (today Johannes-Butzbach-Gymnasium) in Miltenberg and studied German, history and social studies at the University of Würzburg from 1964 to 1969 for teaching at grammar schools. During his studies at the University of Würzburg (1964–1969) he was active in the general student committee, in the RCDS and in the Catholic university community. He is a member of the scientific-Catholic student union Unitas-Hetania Würzburg. From 1973 to 1984 he worked as a teacher at the Balthasar-Neumann-Gymnasium in Marktheidenfeld. From 1984 to 2008 he was first mayor of the town of Marktheidenfeld, which made him an honorary citizen in 2008.

The city culture was a particular concern of Scherg. After the renovation in 1986, the old town hall was made available to the adult education center (VHS). With the renovation of the Franck house in 1998, Marktheidenfeld received a second cultural center. The renovation of the old town began in 1986. Other focal points were the expansion of the Marktheidenfeld industrial site in the core city and in the Altfeld district, residential development, especially the Birken III construction area, and the promotion of the districts and associations. In December 2002 the north bridge of Marktheidenfeld was opened to traffic.

Scherg was a member of the Main-Spessart District Assembly for the CSU from 1990 to 2008 and a member of the Lower Franconia District Assembly from 1992 to 1994. In the Bavarian Association of Cities he was active from 1998 to 2008 as a representative of the Lower Franconian cities belonging to the district. The Free State of Bavaria honored Scherg on May 2, 2003 with the municipal medal of merit in bronze.

During his term of office, the town twinning agreements with Montfort-sur-Meu in Brittany and Pobiedziska near Posen fall . The town twinning committee Marktheidenfeld made him an honorary member on October 3rd, 2008, the town of Monfort made him "Citoyen d´Honneur" in 2009.

In the water supply association of the Marktheidenfelder Gruppe, Scherg was deputy chairman of the association from 1984 to 1988 and chairman of the association from 1988 to 2008. After supply difficulties, a second water catchment area with three wells was developed between 1995 and 2004. On July 13, 2012, he was made honorary chairman. According to the decision of the association assembly, a fourth fountain is to be named "Leonhardsbrunnen".

From 1985 to 2017 Scherg was chairman of the supervisory board of the building cooperative "Heimstättenwerk" in Marktheidenfeld, which appointed him on October 5, 2018 to an honorary supervisory board. In 2010 he received the Great Badge of Honor for many years of service from the Association of Bavarian Housing Companies. From 1984 to 2008 he was a member of the board of directors of Lebenshilfe for the disabled in Marktheidenfeld and the surrounding area.

Scherg is chairman of the VHS Marktheidenfeld association. He is a member of the local coordination group for cooperation with the Universitätsbund Würzburg and has been a member of the Society's Council since 2008.

He is a founding member of the historical association Marktheidenfeld und Umgebung (1978), the town twinning committee (1987) and the sponsorship group Synagoge Urspringen (1990). From 1978 to 1984 he was 2nd chairman of the historical association, from 1990 to 2017 1st chairman of the Förderkreis Synagoge Urspringen. He continues to work as a member of the advisory board and webmaster for the Förderkreis. He is an honorary member of the fishing and boatmen guild Marktheidenfeld (1985), the boatmen's association "Gute Fahrt Marktheidenfeld" (1994), the painters and varnishers guild Main-Spessart (2008) and the historical association Marktheidenfeld und Umgebung (2014). On January 27, 2009, he received a "Certificate of Commendation" from the "German Jewish Community History Council", USA, in recognition of his commitment to Jewish history.

The district of Main-Spessart recognized the longstanding voluntary work in 2018 with the award of the Silver Medal of Merit.

Scherg, who received his doctorate in 1976 at the University of Würzburg with a thesis on the medieval history of the Cistercian Abbey of Bronnbach , was from 1977 to 1986 district home administrator for the old district of Marktheidenfeld. Scherg has been the district archivist for the old districts of Marktheidenfeld and Rothenfels since 2008. In addition to Bronnbach and the Cistercians, the focus of his historical research is on Marktheidenfeld and the Marktheidenfeld area as well as the history of the Jews in the Marktheidenfeld area, in the Main-Spessart district and Lower Franconia. He published numerous articles on these topics.
