Peter Hamm was born in Munich in 1937 as the son of a veterinarian. His mother died in 1940, due to the absence of his father due to the war, he grew up with his grandparents in Weingarten in Upper Swabia and in various Catholic boarding schools. At the age of 14 he fled the Salvatorkolleg in Bad Wurzach and worked temporarily as a farmhand in a farm. He then began an apprenticeship as a bookseller in Lindau , which he broke off after a year.

In 1954 he published poems for the first time in the literary magazine Akzente , later also in the features section of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and in various anthologies . In 1956, during the Hungarian People's Uprising , he gave his first reading at Group 47 . In 1958 he began a pen friendship with Nelly Sachs and befriended Tomas Tranströmer .

From 1959 he was in the GDR several times and made friends with the authors Peter Huchel , Sarah Kirsch , Johannes Bobrowski and Volker Braun . That year he also visited Paul Celan and Nathalie Sarraute in Paris.

1959 Hamm became head of the press office of the then College of Design in Ulm . From 1960 he worked as a freelance writer. From 1964 to 2002 he was culture editor at Bayerischer Rundfunk .

Hamm was Vice President of the German Academy for Language and Poetry , of which he had been a member since 1991. Since 1996 he has been a member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts . He was also a member of the jury for the Hermann Lenz Prize and the Petrarca Prize ; Shortly before his death on June 28, 2019, Hamm had given the laudation in Munich - as well as the Büchner Prize and the Peter Huchel Prize .

He was known to a wide audience from the literature club , of which he was a permanent critic from 1990 to 2012. He was also a jury member for the monthly SWR leaderboard .

criticism

In a letter to Martin Walser , who wanted to discuss Hamm's poem laying down for the FAZ , Marcel Reich-Ranicki wrote on April 24, 1986: “I can assume that the poem you have chosen by Peter Hamm (“ laying down ”) is one of the highlights of this author's poetic work. So now the readers will be able to clearly recognize the level of Hamm's poetry. At the same time, your contribution will make all your literary tastes clear. The fact that I consider the poem to be miserable and not find a single line in it that I could describe as poetic need not bother you in the least ”.
