The Kalandula Falls are located in the course of the Lucala , a tributary of the Cuanza , in the province of Malanje , in Angola . The eponymous town of Calandula is nearby. The height of the falls is 105 m.
history
The falls were named by the Portuguese settlers after their nearby village Duque de Bragança (today Calandula ), after the Portuguese King D. Pedro V from the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha , who was Duke of Braganza . The cases were given their current name after Angola's independence in 1975.
In 1940 a pousada was planned based on a design by the Austrian architect Franz Schacherl , which was only built later according to plans by a Portuguese architect. The inn was in operation until 1974, but was given up after independence in 1975 and the beginning of the Angolan civil war (1975-2002). In 2009, an investor acquired the building, renovated it and now operates a hotel again.
meaning
The Kalandula Falls are among the most famous natural spectacles in the country, although they have not yet become very well known outside of Angola. They are among the highest waterfalls in Africa. Besides the Ruacana Falls , there are the highest waterfalls in Angola.
