Coccyzus is a genus of the subfamily of Cozzyzinae in the family of cuckoos .

Distribution and characteristics

Representatives of the genus Coccyzus are common in America . They have slender bodies and long tails, many with a black and white undertail pattern. They occur in a large number of (mangrove) forests.

Coccyzus , unlike many Old World species , build their own nests in trees, mostly on smaller trees or the deeper branches of larger trees.

Eggs are usually bluish white to light green in color, with yellow or white clouds; 2–3 cm in diameter. Eggs from Coccyzus einereus are white.

The northern species yellow-billed cuckoo and black- billed cuckoo occasionally lay eggs in the nests of other birds, but are not obligatory breeding parasites like the common cuckoo from Eurasia. These cuckoos are full migratory birds and overwinter in Central or South America. During their migration they occasionally make their way to Western Europe as a stray visitor , whereas the tropical Coccyzus species are predominantly resident birds .

Systematics

The genus currently includes 13 species. In 2006, the American Ornithologists' Union merged the 4 species of the genus Saurothera and 2 species of Hyetornis with Coccyzus . The German names follow Avibase.
