Calulo (also Kalulo ) is a small town in Angola . It is the capital of the district ( Município ) of Libolo , in the province of Cuanza Sul . Some families of Angola Germans live in the area around the place.

history

The local population resisted the Portuguese colonial rulers when they tried to take control of the area in the 16th century.

In keeping with the imperialist zeitgeist of the epoch, the Portuguese also increased their colonial presence again at the end of the 19th century. In 1890 they founded an administrative post in Calulo, which was particularly threatened by local resistance from 1895. In 1897 the Portuguese built a fortress here, into which they fled, especially during the 1917 uprising.

In 1932 the efforts to finally pacify were finally successful and the Libolo administrative district was formed. The seat was Calulo, which was elevated to a small town ( Vila ) in January 1900 . The place experienced a significant development, especially due to the intensified coffee cultivation in the 1960s. The city is also known as a place of pilgrimage. The reason for this is the statue of the Virgin Mary, which came to Luanda from Fátima in 1967 and has been in the Calulo Church, which was consecrated at the same time, since 1968. After the destruction and emigration as a result of the Angolan civil war after independence in 1975, Calulo has experienced renewed development since the end of the civil war in 2002. The resumption of coffee growing and the construction of the EN120 national road to Huambo were important factors in the economic recovery.

Sports

The football club CRD Libolo is at home in the Estádio Municipal de Calula , which has a capacity of 5,000 spectators . The club has already won the Girabola championship , the country's top division, three times . The club's basketball department is also successful in the country's top division, with the runner-up championships in 2009 and 2010. The CRD's karate department was able to win the national title three times in a row from 2008 to 2010.
