Nossa Senhora do Cabo
Nossa Senhora do Cabo Church on the Ilha do Cabo peninsula in Luanda is the oldest church in Angola .
history
The first 40 Portuguese traders, who already settled on the peninsula in 1575, built a small chapel out of branches and with a thatched roof in a bay where they held their masses. It was called Nossa Senhora da Imaculada Conceição and was built on the site where the Portuguese explorer Paulo Dias de Novais landed on February 11, 1575. After the occupation of Luanda by the Dutch (1641–1648) and the return of the Portuguese, the church was restored and expanded between 1648 and 1669. After the work was finished, it was dedicated to the "Virgin Mary on the Cape". It was kept in the colors white and blue, which are reminiscent of the sea around it. The architecture is similar to that of other churches built by the Portuguese in Bombay . In 1854 it was raised to a parish . On May 25, 1945, it was declared a building of public interest by the National Institute of Cultural Heritage.
After the construction of a wall at a nearby naval base , the church has been flooded several times since 2012 due to prolonged rain, during which the pews were also flooded. It was only after the pastor had shot a video of the flooding in 2018 and published it on the Internet that the Governor of Luanda and the Minister of Culture of Angola visited him shortly afterwards and offered their support.
