The Museu Nacional de História Natural is a state museum for natural history in the center of Luanda , in which the flora and fauna of Angola is preserved and exhibited.

history

The museum was founded in 1938 under the name Museu de Angola and housed in the São Miguel fortress of Luanda . In addition to zoology and botany, there were exhibitions of ethnography , art history, geology and economics. In the annex there was a library and the historical colonial archive. In 1956, a new building in the modernist style was erected for the natural history collection and the architecturally valuable market hall of Kinaxixi was demolished against the protest of Oscar Niemeyer . After Angola's independence, it was given its current name in May 1976. In May 2014, the museum was temporarily closed for renovation and renovation work and reopened in November 2016.

collection

The three-story museum has 37 dioramas depicting mammals - including marine mammals - reptiles , amphibians, and birds. These include the giant sable antelope , the heraldic animal of Angola, and a 15 meter long whale skeleton, as well as leopards , spotted hyenas , macaques and anacondas . In 11 other dioramas, fish and other marine animals such as mollusks and mussels are exhibited, including the zimbo shell money used in the ancient Kingdom of the Congo . There are butterflies and other insects in a foyer.

Project

Due to the old and limited collection, an expansion project was started in 2013, which calls on the public to provide the museum with suitable wild animals of all kinds that are in poor health or have just died. For some time now, the museum's scientific assistants and students from the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the Universidade Agostinho Neto have been looking for new animal species that they can prepare and exhibit.
