Johann Georg Baron von Lieven , count since 1799 , prince since 1826 ( Russian Иван Андреевич Ливен Iwan Andrejewitsch Lieven ; * 13 May July / 24 May  1775 greg. In Kiev ; † 2 February July / 14 February  1848 greg . in Mitau ) was a Russian lieutenant general .

Life

Origin and family

Johann came from the Emperor I. Nicholas 1,826 princely branch of the Baltic noble family Lieven . His parents were the Russian major general and commandant of Kiev Otto Heinrich von Lieven (1726–1781) and the Russian chief stewardess Charlotte, nee Freiin Gaugreben (1742–1828).

In 1817 he married Marie, née von Anrep (1787–1839), daughter of the Russian Lieutenant General Reinhold von Anrep (1760–1807). The marriage resulted in six children, of whom Marie (1818-1853) and Paul (1821-1881) achieved particular fame, Emilie (1824-1883) since 1845 with the chief steward and Kurland plenipotentiary Karl Baron Manteuffel-Szoege (1820-1884) was married.

Career

Lieven began his career in the Imperial Russian Army in 1790, Ensign of the Guard . As early as 1799 he was a colonel in the Semjonowski bodyguard regiment and in 1800 advanced to major general and chief of the "Lwow" infantry regiment. In the Fourth Coalition War he fought in the Battle of Preussisch Eylau in 1807 , was wounded and awarded the Order of St. George III. Class excellent. In 1811 he became commander of the 10th Infantry Division in the Moldavian Army, was involved in the siege of Nikopol , Vidin and in the battles around Rustschuk and was commander of Braila .

At the beginning of the Patriotic War of 1812 his 10th Division was part of the 3rd Reserve Army (General of the Cavalry Tormassow ), which was later renamed the 3rd Western Army. His troops were deployed in the Brest-Litovsk area and took part in the fighting near Ustilug and Luboml . In the campaign of 1813 the 10th Division belonged to the XI. Infantry Corps of General von Osten-Sacken . Lieven's troops reached the Vistula crossing at Pulawy , were involved in the capture of the city of Czenstochau , the siege of Breslau and the battle of the Katzbach . He was promoted to lieutenant general on September 15, 1813 and also took part in the Battle of Leipzig as part of the Silesian Army . In the campaign of 1814 his troops fought in the battle of Brienne and La Rothière , where he was wounded again. On December 1, 1815 Lieven was dismissed at his own request from the post of commander of the 10th Infantry Division and adopted .

He was the holder of the Alexander Nevsky Order , the Saint Vladimir Order II Class and the Stankt Anna Order I Class.

Lieven owned extensive estates . These included Fideikommiß Mesothen in Courland, Glebau and Szeimel in Lithuania, Kremon and Kipsal in Livonia , finally Meščerskaja and Vlasunowa in Yaroslavl Governorate , and Licideewo in Nizhny Novgorod Governorate .
